He didn't know what he was in for. Talking soon escalated into yelling, and before we knew it shouts of “baby killers” and “warmongers” bounced off the walls. The Liberals had the Conservatives in a corner while the Libertarians' faces turned crimson with exasperation. I grinned. I knew that this class would satiate my thirst for politics while keeping me entertained. However, Josh didn't find the pandemonium amusing and chose to assign us reading in order to “base our opinions on facts.” After several hours of dry reading, we desperately wanted to continue discussion of the issues. I think everyone realized that, in order to enjoy the class, we had to abide by the rules of civil conversation that we learned in first grade. You know, don't talk while other people are talking, respect everyone's opinions, raise your hand to speak, etc. Of course, the new rules of discussion did not suddenly result in the Liberals embracing the Conservatives in a kumbaya mentality, but it helped people see valid points to every side of an issue. Although we didn't always agree ideologically, we appreciated the passion and conviction each member of the class brought to the discussion. After class was dismissed, we often sat together at lunch or in the quad debating Professor Snape's status as a villain in Harry Potter, college basketball standings, and, yes, politics.
The next year I stood at the same bus stop with some of my classmates from the previous year, but with a whole new set of expectations for the coming summer. Even if everything I wanted out of Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) didn't come to fruition, I felt satisfied because TIP already gave me so much the previous summer. It gave me a place where I could express my political opinion without fear of judgment or personal attacks. TIP gave me hope that I will someday find a place where people seek to debate each other's views on an intellectual basis, focusing on the facts rather than making knee-jerk emotional statements. TIP taught me to embrace my “nerdiness”, and it gave me taste of what I want out of my college experience—the opportunity to explore my academic interests among people who feel as strongly about their own.
