Dr. Shillingburg at the Oklahoma School of Dentistry published that custom trays use 12-14 mls of material for a full arch impression. Stock trays use 40-44 mls per full arch impression. We will use .48 cents per ml of impression material in our cost comparison. Full arch impressions using the Easy Tray made in the mouth in a minute custom tray cost about $12. This includes the cost of an opposing arch impression in alginate and the cost of a disposable fluoride tray. Full arch impressions taken with custom trays made with acrylic or light cure materials cost between $85 and $115. With this method you must first make a stone model and then pay some labor to have the tray made. Acrylic will get you 10-12 full arch trays per pound of material if you have no mistakes or waste. Cost about $5 per tray. Light cure will cost about the same and both require much time. Full arch impressions made with a stock plastic tray will cost about $25. All these include the cost of light body and a syringe. A typical dual arch tray uses 18-24 mls per quadrant. These will cost about $12 per quadrant. Labs would rather have full arch impressions for most crown and bridge. The dentist will have easier seat appointments since less time is spent in adjusting occlusion and lateral movements. As for bite registration, take a small piece of the softened Easy Tray, place it where you want it and have the patient close. Blow a little air on it and in 10-15 seconds you will have a bite that is firm and can do from one tooth to a full arch. Cost here is .10 cents to 30 cents. Sure better than a bite registration material costing $6-$9. A typical dental office doing 225 impressions will save around $2500 in material costs.
