Tips on How to Become a Makeup Artist: 1. Practice Your Craft Practice makes perfect. It’s very important to never stop learning and to keep practicing on different models and people. Your main goal is to get so much practice that practically no face looks “new to you” and you are able to execute makeup at a high level and keep a connected, engaged conversation with your clients, this will go a really long way. Practicing your craft makes you an expert and speaks to your talent and hard work ethic. Also, in a social media age, it’s really important to continue to build your portfolio; the more variety of looks you have on your Instagram/Facebook, for example, the more comfortable potential clients feel in booking you as an artist/company. 2. Research the Makeup Brands There are many reasons to research a variety of makeup brands. First, you have to know what’s out there, try it all and then be confident with what brands you will use on your clients. Clients always feel more comfortable when you explain why you love the makeup you are using on them, what it does for their look or for what it does to enhance their skin, eyes, lips, etc. Another reason to research different brands of makeup is that we are deep into a digital age which means social media is everything. You can really leverage yourself as an artist if you put yourself out on these different platforms. Using a variety of products, tagging them and hashtagging them will get your work noticed. Makeup companies will repost looks done with their makeup and if you get lucky it can get posted in front of thousands of potential clients. 3. Formal Education Receiving formal education in makeup artistry and application is important, but it’s definitely not the last of the studying you will do in this career. Being able to continually educate yourself as an artist is the key to success. Techniques change throughout the years and so do makeup products; you are continuously asked to “keep up” in this industry if you want to do well and book your dream clients. When clients sit in your chair, one of the most asked questions I get is; so how did you get started in this industry; having a great story and also some formal education mixed in really help ease your clients. 4. Find a Mentor in the Industry Once you have gained some footing in the industry, gone to school and chose your favorite lines to work with; its now time to feel inspired by a mentor. Having a mentor can really give you more insight into the beauty industry. Sure, you might be doing some brush cleaning and makeup organizing, but their guidance can help you gain years of knowledge and experience in a matter of months. Because your mentor has been in the industry for several years, or maybe even decades; they possess a certain knowledge, have certain personal contacts to people and small/large organizations, this is an advantage for you as a new and upcoming artist. They are there to help you and see you through unique situations, like how to design your studio space, what cameras are best for taking photos and so much more. Having a mentor is a must-have in this day! 5. Use the Right Tools such as Beauty Lights Understanding photography and lighting is a must for makeup artists everywhere. Finding a light that is portable and easy to use is the number one key to taking great photographs of your work. Your makeup portfolio will be showcased on your website and or Instagram page and will give clients the confidence to book you. Our Makeup Beauty Light is a revolutionary light that showcases your work flawlessly. 6. Wear the Appropriate Shoes This one is not so obvious but having comfortable shoes will make it so you can stand long hours and do makeup. Standing for long hours can cause pain in the feet, legs, back, and neck. Avoid this by buying a shoe that provides good arch support. 7. Love Your Job You know that saying: if you love your job and you won’t work a day in your life. This can’t stand more true for being a makeup artist. The days are long, you are standing, there will be picky clients, and you will work on weekends when everyone else is socializing and enjoying. It is so important to feel inspired and love what you do.
