Mission
Xavier University of Louisiana is Catholic and historically Black. The ultimate purpose of the University is the promotion of a more just and humane society. To this end, Xavier prepares its students to assume roles of leadership and service in society. This preparation takes place in a pluralistic teaching and learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service. So that they will be able to assume roles of leadership and service, Xavier graduates will be: prepared for continual spiritual, moral, and intellectual development; liberally educated in the knowledge and skills required for leadership and service; and educated in a major field so that they are prepared to complete graduate or professional school and to succeed in a career and in life. Recent enrollment and retention decreases have been recognized as a few of the temporary effects of Hurricane Katrina. As more students return we look forward to Xavier University of Louisiana once again being a leader amongst the nations colleges and universities. Our current Student Government President illustrates the unique qualities and strengths of our institution. A Message from the SGA President On behalf of the students of Xavier University of Louisiana, it is my pleasure to invite you to consider a college experience that will change and enhance your life forever. Xavier alumni are known across the world for being exceptional doctors and lawyers, educators and journalists, philanthropists, research scientists and the like. And despite the damages to our campus last August from Hurricane Katrina, I can assure you that choosing Xavier is still a great choice indeed. As a Senior Business Administration major with a concentration in Finance, and president of the Student Government Association (SGA) I know that Xavier has thoroughly prepared me for my career in Corporate America while nurturing me spiritually and socially. True, I never might have imagined attending a school in a city that experienced so much tragedy following Hurricane Katrina. However, with tragedy comes great opportunity to triumph. Since our campus reopened in January 2006 after repairing the hurricane damage, the Xavier family has grown stronger. People in general seem more appreciative of friends, family, and what some might call sentimental values. In a way, Hurricane Katrina may have added to the character of people, and enhanced the very principles this university was founded upon. The university's founder, St. Katharine Drexel, understood the necessity to provide minority students with a quality education - second to none - and the skills needed to be better leaders AND servers, in order to help build a more just and humane society. What better time than now, to become a part of the rebuilding of New Orleans - one of America's most unique cities - while gaining one of the best college educations in the world? Finally, take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities that Xavier provides you. Higher education is not only about gaining intellectual knowledge, but acquiring social and community skills as well. Extra-curricular activities are a great way to meet new people, find your place, and to create wonderful memories of your time here. At Xavier we offer a wide array of clubs, organizations and teams to suit the needs and interests of the student body. Some of these clubs include: Peer Dean Association, Commuter Student Association, Xavier Activities Board, Jazz Band, NAACP, Men's and Women's Basketball, Business Achievers Club, MAX (Mobilization at Xavier) and the PanHellenic Council. Get involved, make new friends, create wonderful memories, but most of all, have fun!
