Mission
In the 2010 edition of America's Best Colleges, Wofford is listed among 40 great schools, great prices among the nation's liberal arts colleges. In these challenging economic times, the ability to deliver a world-class product while charging fees and expenses only slightly above the national average is more important than ever. Following is a brief summary of six relatively new, high-value features of the time-tested Phi Beta Kappa education offered at Wofford for almost 160 years. (1) The college is committed to seeing that a high percentage of its students receive opportunities for study abroad. For years, Wofford has ranked in the top 10 percent of the annual IIE Open Doors survey, with well over 80 percent earning credits overseas. 53 percent of the students selected less commonly chosen destinations and spent a semester in the developing world. (2) Located in a middle-sized Southern city, Wofford stresses service-learning opportunities in a variety of settings. The college made the 2009-2010 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, published by the Corporation for National and Community Service. For two straight years, Wofford has been listed ???with distinction.??? ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. In 2008, Wofford's student-led project won the national ONE Campus Challenge that involved 1400 colleges and universities. (3) The Community of Scholars initiative is a 10-week summer research program focused on creating cross-disciplinary dialogue. Rather than empowering faculty to recruit paid research associates, Community of Scholars challenges students to design projects and attract an interested faculty sponsor. The goal is to make this approach to research a model for similar liberal arts campuses as well as university schools and colleges. (4) C. Michael Curtis, fiction editor of the Atlantic Monthly, holds an endowed professorship at Wofford. He continues to have significant influence on students in the creative writing program. Another senior faculty member teaches a class where advanced creative writing students write a novel, and the best effort is published in the Benjamin Wofford novel series. (5) In the spring of 2010, Wofford will graduate its first majors in environmental studies, a unique major that combines the natural sciences, social sciences, and literature. The program is headquartered on campus and at the Goodall Environmental Studies Center, a restored mill office building that has been renovated to LEED standards. (5) Largely through the work of Dr. Ellen Goldey of the department of biology, Wofford is an active participant in SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities), which stimulates student engagement in science and mathematics through courses and programs focused on real world problems. A dozen or more faculty members have been responsible for developing Wofford's on-going inter-disciplinary learning communities, a first-year highlight for many students. Innovations such as these create an atmosphere of student engagement at Wofford that has resulted in exceptionally high scores on the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) and the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). In a follow-up NSSE study, "Project DEEP," Wofford was featured as one of 20 benchmark campuses for engaged learning in the book, Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter (American Association for Higher Education, 2005). This study concluded, in part, "By all accounts, Wofford College is an engaging institution that benefits from an enviable level of loyalty and collegiality among students, faculty, administrators and all college employees. In part, this is due to a storied tradition, open communication, leadership continuity, and the college's small size."
