Mission
The University of Mary Washington, long a highly respected and sought after institution for pursuit of academic excellence in the liberal arts, has this year added new colleges of business and education to complement its existing college of arts and sciences. Solidly grounded in the liberal arts tradition, students in all three colleges have the opportunity to work directly with professors to achieve their academic and career goals. The UMW experience is based on a culture of honor, individual recognition, and dedication to community and global service, and the university places great value on diversity within its student body. An education at UMW, with multiple opportunities for student research and service learning, prepares graduates for outstanding careers or for entry into graduate school. A wide range of programs includes strong majors in political science and international affairs, English, biology, psychology, earth and environmental science, history, visual and performing arts, economics, and business. Other distinctive offerings include historic preservation, a concentration in creative writing, and one of the top debate programs in the country. With its classic Jeffersonian-inspired architecture, beautifully manicured central campus walk, spacious grounds, and residential dorms located amidst traditional lecture halls, UMW truly conveys the uniquely American college experience. At the same time, renovation of heritage dorms, classrooms, performance centers, and new construction of a 624-bed residential community and 2,000-seat convocation center provide students with superb facilities. The campus is centrally located halfway between Washington, DC and Richmond, Va., making access to national monuments, museums, government facilities, and vibrant social scenes just a short trip away. These two capitals also serve as a rich resource for undergraduate student internships as well as a promising job market for graduates. Historic Fredericksburg, Va., the university's host city, abounds with interesting shops, great restaurants, quaint bookstores and coffee shops, all typical of the college scene and within easy walking distance from campus. One of Virginia's newest and largest modern shopping and entertainment complexes also is nearby. The campus itself is brimming with activity throughout the school year. More than 100 student organizations and clubs not only provide opportunity for leadership but also are active in arranging events for the entire student body. Whether at the new "Underground" snack bar and coffee house, on the lush green at Ball Circle, or at spirit rock near Campus Center, there is always something going on. UMW Eagles teams regularly compete at the championship level in NCAA Division III, and there are numerous intramural and club sporting activities available for students to compete at all levels. Getting to and from the UMW campus and around the area is easy. The local commuter bus service, FRED, serves the campus and the surrounding area, the AMTRAK station is located just downtown, and international airports in Washington DC and Richmond connect the university with the rest of the world. UMW students are bright, multitalented, and involved. Accomplished professors provide individualized attention to their students, and the university environment is friendly and welcoming.
