Mission
The first Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, three young French women motivated by the love of God and their recognition of God's presence in each person, came to San Antonio in 1869 to minister to the sick and the poor. Their spirit of Christian service is perpetuated in the University of the Incarnate Word primarily through teaching and scholarship. Inspired by Judeo-Christian values, the University aims to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens. The university is committed to educational excellence in a context of faith in Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God. It promotes life-long learning and fosters the development of the whole person. The faculty and students support one another in the search for and the communication of truth . The university is open to thoughtful innovation that serves ever more effectively the spiritual and material needs of people. The curriculum offers students an integrated program of liberal arts and professional studies that includes a global perspective and an emphasis on social justice and community service. The University of the Incarnate Word is a Catholic institution that welcomes to its community persons of diverse backgrounds, in the belief that their respectful interaction advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realization, and the common good. The University of the Incarnate Word offers students the comfort of small classes and a close network of family. With a 14:1 student-faculty ratio and an average class size of 25, students build relationships that extend beyond the classroom and provide a solid foundation of guidance and personal attention. Founded in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, UIW provides a quality education to students pursuing degrees in more than 40 of today's most sought-after undergraduate programs. UIW students enjoy state-of-the-art technology both in and out of the classroom. With great equipment, Gateway Laptops, wired dorms and classrooms, and wireless access across the campus, student learning occurs everywhere. UIW is a leader in international education. Students can study abroad in any of nearly 100 sister schools in 34 countries while earning credits that can be applied to their degree, spending a semester or longer in countries such as China, Taiwan, Japan, Mexico, Turkey, Chile, Australia, Peru, Italy, New Zealand, Brazil, England, France, and Thailand. Incarnate Word is also the first American institution to grant degrees of higher learning in China, through the China Incarnate Word Foreign Education Center in Guangzhou, China. In addition, UIW is the first school to offer degrees in Mexico City that are accredited both in the United States and in Mexico, at Centro Internacional Universitario Miguel Angel-Incarnate Word in Mexico City. Student organizations help UIW students develop skills necessary for successful careers and to become community leaders. The Office of Student Life provides assistance with on-campus housing, career and personal counseling, and health services. It also sponsors a number of social and academic student groups. The University of the Incarnate Word is located near the heart of downtown San Antonio in the charming Alamo Heights area, near Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Zoo, Japanese Tea Gardens, the Witte Museum of history and natural science, and the McNay Art Museum. The 200-acre campus itself is an oasis for learning and growth. Students enjoy the picturesque campus adorned with oak and pecan trees, and the headwaters of the San Antonio River, a natural spring at the heart of the campus.
