Mission
What makes Texas Lutheran University special? A sense of community. A rigorous academic program. And an environment where students grow and succeed. For over a century, TLU has made a positive difference in the lives of countless individuals. There is nothing quite like the energy and excitement of a college campus - a place where important work is being done - in the classroom, on the athletic field, in the concert hall, at worship. It is a remarkable journey. And TLU is an excellent place for this remarkable journey. Founded in 1891, TLU is a private, exclusively undergraduate university of the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies, located on a tree-filled campus in Seguin, Texas, a growing community of about 25,000 people near San Antonio and Austin. On a campus with 1,400 students and small classes averaging just 18 students, TLU professors provide support and challenge - people who know students well enough to provide just the right amount of each. Professors are academic scholars doing exciting research; teachers who care about communicating with students and helping them develop innate talents and new skills; role models of good character, civility, and grace under pressure; and people who are lifelong students themselves - curious, adventurous, funny, and creative. These professors take time to pay attention to their students' strengths and interests so they can personally recommend them for graduate schools and professional careers as individuals whom they know well. TLU offers nearly 40 majors and fields of study, including an accounting program where graduating seniors rank near the top in the nation. The university also boasts an outstanding science program with an excellent medical and graduate school acceptance rate and one of the fastest growing physics and engineering programs of its kind. TLU's excellent reputation also extends to many other programs, including, just to name a few, kinesiology, music, theology, psychology, and education. TLU encourages students to study abroad, participate in internships, and gain experiential learning so that by the time they graduate, most TLU students have had real-world, hands-on opportunities to explore their career plans and test their abilities. But learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. Campus life is an encompassing experience that develops the whole person - and coaches, music directors, and staff members are all part of the mentoring support system of TLU. Nearly one-third of the student body participates in one of the 14 NCAA Division III teams that TLU fields. These student-athletes are students first, as evidenced by the frequency of TLU students named to Academic All-American teams. TLU is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and about one-fourth of its students are Lutheran. All faiths are welcome and make up an active campus ministry. The school's Moline Center for Servant Leadership helps fulfill the university's mission of preparing undergraduates academically, spiritually, and socially in a residential community of faith and learning for service and leadership. TLU is a selective university with a rolling admission system that considers more than strictly GPA and SAT scores alone. Individual consideration is given to each applying student based on his or her record, achievements, and involvement. TLU is an affordable national liberal arts institution with outstanding merit scholarships and 95 percent of TLU students receiving financial aid.
