Mission
The 2009-2010 academic year began with a major milestone: Saint Louis University (SLU) enrolled 13,300 students, the largest in the university's nearly 200-year history. When the record number of students returned to campus, they were greeted by a number of new majors and enhanced programs, including civil engineering, environmental studies, health management and health informatics. The University also completed a major overhaul of its communication program, including a new state-of-the-art, 8,500-square-foot digital media center. While new academic programs were getting under way, others were being planned. Starting in fall 2010, SLU will offer a master's degree in sustainability-the first of its kind in the Midwest. In addition, the university has approved other new programs for fall 2010, including an undergraduate degree in community health and an accelerated master's degree that prepares nurses to take a leadership role in providing patient care. New centers of excellence were unveiled as well in 2009-2010, including the Federal Aviation Administration-funded National Center for Aviation Safety Research. The university also received a $5 million grant from a private foundation to launch a new Center for Sustainability-a first for the nation's 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. The 2009-2010 academic year has been an exciting time for scientific discovery and life-changing breakthroughs at the university. During FY 2009, SLU received nearly $61 million for research, including funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation and Centers for Disease Control. In 2009, SLU's School of Medicine joined the frontline of the nation's fight against H1N1 influenza. The university was one of eight elite institutions chosen by the National Institutes of Health to conduct vaccine trials. In October 2009, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius visited the university's renowned Center for Vaccine Development where the vaccine was tested on adults, children and pregnant women. The university's internationally respected Earthquake Center received federal stimulus monies in 2009 to upgrade earthquake monitoring stations in the Midwest. SLU's School of Public Health-the only accredited school of public health in Missouri-continued its leading role in a landmark study on the environmental and genetic factors that influence the development of disease in children. Recognition for the university's scientific prowess also came from unlikely arenas. Major League Baseball selected Quantum Weather, a revolutionary forecasting system invented by SLU meteorologists, to provide the official weather predictions for the 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis. The university was selected to be the official forecasting partner of the St. Louis Cardinals. The university continued to earn national accolades for its academic excellence. Among them, philosophers from around the world named several of SLU's graduate philosophy programs among the best in the English speaking world (Philosophical Gourmet Report). The 2009-2010 academic year also saw the appearance of major figures on the campus. Among them, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon spoke at SLU in his first official trip to the Midwest since being elected to the post. In addition to academic and research excellence, the University demonstrated its commitment to community in a record-breaking way. Students, faculty and staff contributed more than 1 million service hours, the most in university history. In one of the more significant individual examples of SLU service, the university worked with community partners to open Casa de Salud in 2010. Meaning "House of Health" in Spanish, Casa de Salud is a new wellness clinic for the under served Hispanic community in St. Louis. With these high points in academics, research and service, Saint Louis University continues to move forward as it approaches 200 years.
