Mission
Seattle University distinguishes itself in three ways: our Jesuit tradition, a broad range of challenging and engaging academic and co-curricular programs, and our home in the world-class city that shares our name. Much of what makes Seattle great - its global connectedness, natural beauty, environmental awareness, cutting-edge music scene and progressive civic ethic - is reflected on our campus in the heart of an energetic urban neighborhood. Seattle University is dedicated to educating the whole person, to professional formation, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world. Our exceptional faculty offer outstanding programs in the Humanities, Arts and Sciences as well as nationally recognized programs in professional fields including Business, Engineering and Nursing and pre-professional programs in Education, Law and Medicine. We have one professor for every 13 students and we provide them with rich opportunities to learn by engaging and interacting with their teachers and with each other. Our professors are passionate about helping students grow and excel through mentorships, real-world projects and career development. Our students are involved, energized and excited about learning. Seattle University offers 61 undergraduate and 39 graduate programs. Our emphasis on global education, service to society and academic rigor has made us very successful in producing Truman and Fulbright scholars. Our commitment to sustainability has resulted in our campus being designated the greenest in Washington state. Our new facilities, including our new library and learning commons, provide students with state-of-the-art learning and communications technology. A Seattle University education engages the whole person - mind, body and spirit. Our students develop critical intellectual skills, gain meaningful knowledge and grow spiritually, socially and personally . Athletics, fitness and recreation foster the lifelong physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual development of our students. Our 17 NCAA Division One athletics teams and robust intramural sports offerings are complemented by our Outdoor Adventure Recreation program, designed to provide opportunities to enjoy the beautiful and natural surroundings of the Pacific Northwest. As one of 28 Jesuit universities in the United States, our Jesuit educational tradition animates Seattle University's values of rigorous academics, commitment to service, global awareness and personal reflection. Three out of four students serve the community through volunteer activities and internships. Our alumni include governors, military leaders, renowned musicians, journalists, nurses, engineers, mountaineers, social media innovators, federal judges, Hall of Fame athletes, chief executives and entrepreneurs whose companies make a difference in our world. Seattle is a creative city, celebrated for its literary scene, lively civic debates and innovation in philanthropy, software, retailing, aviation, outdoor exploration and coffee. Students have the opportunity to meet inspiring leaders and secure internships with great companies. Each year, more than 500 students study in 45 different countries while working toward their degrees. The Seattle University student body represents more than 76 nations converging at the epicenter of one of the world's most exciting cities. The extraordinary diversity and vitality of the neighborhood connects students to vintage clothing stores, restaurants of every cuisine, great bookstores, clubs and music venues, and perhaps the greatest concentration of cafes per square mile in the United States.
