Mission
Currently celebrating its Centennial year (1910-2010), Radford University is a comprehensive, mid-sized university located in the heart of southwestern Virginia. With small class sizes, rigorous academics, a strong emphasis on service to others and a beautiful 191 acre campus, RU provides an education that is focused on developing the student both inside and outside of the classroom. RU's Honors Academy and LEAD Scholars Program provide furthur opportunities for motivated students to pursue additional academic and leadership opportunities. RU features a student body of approximately 9,000 and nationally recognized faculty-student collaborations. The university's size enables it to provide its students with the broad opportunities and advantages often associated with a larger university. At the same time, RU provides unique opportunities for students and faculty members to develop highly personalized relationships that enrich the educational experience. The university offers 67 degree programs at the undergraduate level and 20 fields of study at the graduate level that have 18 options or specializations and seven post-baccalaureate certificates. Recognizing the growing societal need for additional professionals in the allied health sciences, the university has recently added doctoral degrees in psychology, physical therapy, and nursing practice, and a master's in occupational therapy. Radford University supports a culturally diverse student population through over 200 student clubs and organizations. The recently established Center for Diversity and Inclusion helps provide a student learning environment that respects diversity and encourages individuals to appreciate and value the differences that makes them unique. Competing in the Big South Conference, Radford University operates an outstanding NCAA Division I athletic program. The university's athletics complex includes an array of modern fields, courts and stadiums. A comprehensive intramural program provides the entire student body with opportunities to participate in recreational and competitive sports. RU continues to make advancements in the expansion and renovation of its campus. Fall of 2008 saw the opening of the state-of-the-art Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts and in August 2009, RU completed a major renovation of Young Hall, making it one of the most technologically advanced academic buildings in the United States. In spring 2010, RU began construction of a $44 million signature building for the College of Business and Economics. Construction of a new $32 million student fitness and wellness center will begin in 2011. Radford University is recognized for its commitment to sustainability and responsible stewardship of economic, social and environmental resources. In 2010, RU was named to the Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine's honor roll of "Cool Schools" as one of 12 of the southeastern region's greenest colleges and universities.
