Editorial Text 1
Mikasa Japanese Bistro is in an unassuming location, part of the Lathrop Crossing center, and it'd be easy to skip right over it on the way to the nearby grocery store or Starbucks. This makes finding it feel all the more like unearthing a buried treasure once you step inside. Mikasa looks simple from the exterior, but inside it's obvious the owners took their time creating a sophisticated atmosphere. Modern drop lamps, granite countertops and shiny accents blend to produce a high-class eatery that's perfect for a casual lunch or an important date. It doesn't feel like it's trying too hard, but it definitely has an "enjoy your meal in style" vibe. The sushi at Mikasa has two levels: the simple, spare cuisine that's typical of Japanese fare, and the creative rolls that appeal to the new audience that wants to take sushi to another plane. And if you prefer your food cooked, the classics are all there - teriyaki, noodles and tempura. To start, we had the miso soup ($1.50). The broth tasted slightly of chicken and was full of tofu chunks and seaweed, adding texture to the simple soup. We also ordered salmon sashimi ($10.95), which was pristine, fresh and thinly sliced. It tasted slightly sweet and nearly melted in our mouths. We also were interested in the rolls, especially the more extreme options, and ordered four: the Alaska ($5.95), a simple mix of salmon, cucumber and avocado; the Lathrop ($9.95), shrimp tempura topped with mango sauce; the Pollo Loco ($5.95), fried chicken, cucumber and spicy sauce; and, on the server's recommendation, the Godzilla ($11.95), with fried oysters and spicy tuna. The Lathrop roll was the favorite thanks to its palate-awakening blend of sweet and savory. The Pollo Loco gets points for the most off-the-wall; we had never seen fried chicken on a sushi bar's menu, but this combination was delicious. All the rolls were fresh and presented beautifully, with sauce artistically squiggled across the plates and garnishes adding visual interest. The service was fantastic - friendly and accommodating, never intrusive and willing to offer suggestions when asked. Water glasses were never empty, and extra napkins were brought without our asking. As popular as sushi restaurants have become, it's sometimes difficult to differentiate one from another. Mikasa Japanese Bistro has been able to make an impression in Lathrop by giving sushi aficionados and novices alike something to enjoy. Questions? Comments?
