What are Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are veins that are twisted and enlarged in the legs, making them on the outside of the skin more visible. Spider veins are known as a mild variation of varicose veins, which tend to create more of a web-like appearance, but are often a symptom of underlying vein disease that progresses over time. At one point in their lives, around 30 percent to 60 percent of adults suffer from some form of varicose veins.

Varicose vein symptoms include:

Dark blue or purple veins which can be seen through the skin
Veins that appear twisted or bulging like they are
Heavy sensations in your legs
Throbbing of the leg, swelling or cramping of muscles
Pain following prolonged sitting or standing
Itchiness around your veins' sides
Discoloration of the skin around the veins

A common health condition caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves, called venous insufficiency, is varicose veins. Your veins bring it back when your arteries pump blood from your heart to the rest of your tissues, so that it can be recirculated. But unlike arteries, veins can come under strain because they work against gravity constantly, and with high blood pressure they can become more aggravated. This is why all the risk factors for varicose veins are pregnancy, obesity and old age. Because of genetics, some individuals find they are more likely than others to get varicose veins.

When do I need to worry about varicose veins?

Varicose veins are not just cosmetic - since they are a sign of poor leg circulation, they are a medical condition that a board-certified vein specialist should evaluate. If your symptoms affect daily activities, the veins are red, tender when you press them, they bleed easily, or if you experience swelling, heaviness or itchy veins or discoloration of the skin, treatment may be recommended.

Our vein doctors can evaluate and diagnose the severity of your varicose veins, as well as find the best treatment option for your particular case.

Some individuals wonder if varicose veins can be treated at home. Walking, leg elevation, a healthy diet, avoiding long sitting or standing periods and wearing compression stockings can help relieve symptoms of varicose veins and venous insufficiency on a temporary basis, the disease is progressive and worsens over time, so early treatment is often recommended.

What type of varicose vein treatment is available?

Simple, fast and affordable, the best modern treatment for varicose veins is. For treating varicose veins with little downtime or discomfort, the latest options use a combination of laser, radio frequency and micro foam injections. Treatment options may include, based on the recommendation of your doctors,

Treatments with Laser (known as endogenous laser ablation)

Under the guidance of ultrasound technology, laser treatments utilize a minimally invasive laser beam to treat severe varicose veins. It requires local anesthesia and can generally be performed in less than an hour as an outpatient procedure. This treatment works by heating up the areas of the vein affected until they are closed. To direct the laser to the damaged valve, the surgeon inserts a small optic fiber directly into the vein. The vein immediately starts healing afterwards, and the blood supply is redirected through healthier veins.

Treatment with Radiofrequency (known as radiofrequency ablation)

Instead of a laser, radiofrequency treatment uses heat to close affected veins using radio waves. Under ultrasound guidance, the doctor inserts a catheter, which emits these radio waves, into the affected vein. The blood supply is rerouted once the vein is closed, and it is reabsorbed into the body. Only local anesthesia is required, and it typically takes less than an hour for the entire procedure.

Sclerotherapy with Micro Foam

It takes about ten minutes to perform Micro Foam Sclerotherapy per session, ideal for spider veins and smaller varicose veins, and no anesthesia is required. A vein doctor injects your affected leg veins with a medicated solution. They immediately close down in response and begin to be reabsorbed in the body. To achieve the desired cosmetic results, sometimes more than one treatment is required. Using ultrasound-guided injection with microform solutions, larger veins can also be treated.

Varithena® Micro Foam

Micro Foam Varithena uses medicated foam injected into the leg veins, just like sclerotherapy. Through a tiny catheter, the doctor injects foam and the foam fills up and treats the areas of the vein affected. Local anesthesia is required, and the procedure is typically completed in less than an hour. Within 24 hours, most patients resume normal activities.
