More details
- Mission
- Ever since Marywood's founding in 1915, the University has been distinguished by the way excellent academic and professional preparation is infused with the ethic and values of its founders, the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The University community takes pride in its mission to welcome and serve students from all traditions, beliefs, and backgrounds. The Marywood campus is where students can find their place in the world and begin to take leadership and responsibility for a global society. Exceptional faculty members are committed to this mission, especially when imparting knowledge to both undergraduate and graduate students in small classes in which every student matters. Marywood continues to move ahead in academics, as well as in physical appearance, with $100 million recently invested in new buildings for classes, recreation, and studios. The new School of Architecture opens fall 2009. The Swartz Center for Spiritual Life with adjacent conference center was dedicated in spring 2007 and the spectacular $14 million Mellow Center for Athletics and Wellness was unveiled in fall 2006. The Mellow Center provides complete athletic training and workout facilities and a full-size athletic arena for hosting NCAA-level and regional sports competition. At Marywood, student-athletes choose between 14 very competitive and successful intercollegiate teams. Fitness enthusiasts participate in sports, clubs, aerobics, or intramurals. In addition, the 325-bed Loughran Hall, a freshman residence hall, was renovated and opened in fall 2006. Marywood provides an enormous array of degree programs that enable students to develop fully as individuals and become tomorrow's leaders in the arts, education, business, science, and health. In addition, excellent academic scholarship opportunities are available at Marywood, as are many outstanding programs for professional preparation. Marywood students benefit from participating as members of a diverse community and quickly realize that the academic program is just one aspect of a comprehensive effort to help become a complete person. The University provides all students with the opportunity to expand their horizons by meeting, interacting, and/or living with students from all walks of life, different backgrounds, and different perspectives. Students participate in activities which complement their academic programs, providing a step toward becoming a well-rounded, multidimensional person. Students also have the opportunity to improve their professional skills, develop leadership abilities, or have a voice on campus, since there are dozens of clubs and activities, campus media, student government organizations, and honor societies to make their Marywood life full and rewarding. Marywood's commitment to its students goes beyond helping them earn a degree. From curriculum planning to professional accreditation to career services, Marywood University is focused on providing all students with the tools needed for long-term success. As Marywood alumni, our graduates become respected members of their communities, outstanding scholars, and leaders in their chosen professions and the world.
