The National Institute of Thai Traditional Medicine in Bangkok, as well as many other hospitals, recommend its use against drug addiction withdrawals. More up to date research suggests that the alkaloids 7-hydroxymitragynine may be the primary agonist responsible for the soothing sensation of the withdrawing receptors.
