BIOGRAPHY

Joseph D. Chenger, M.D. is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in joint replacement, shoulder and general orthopaedics. Dr. Chenger received his medical degree in Canada in 1977. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons in 1988, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1982. He is licensed to practice medicine in the Province of Alberta, Canada, and in the states of Tennessee and Massachusetts. His specialties include general orthopaedics, joint replacement, and hip, knee, and shoulder surgery. He maintains active affiliations with Centennial Medical Center, St. Thomas Midtown, and the Hospital for Specialty Surgery in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Chenger received his B.S. degree in 1974 from the University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. His Medical Degree was earned at The University of Calgary, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1977, internship was served at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, followed by residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Calgary, where he was Chief Resident.

Dr. Chenger has a Teaching Fellowship in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Foothills Hospital and a Clinical Fellowship in Reconstructive Joint Rheumatoid Surgery at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Chenger was previously in private practice in Calgary. He previously served as Assistant Professor at the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, as Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, as Chief of Orthopaedics at General Hospital in Nashville, and as Director of Total Joint Replacement at Centennial Medical Center. In 1996, he was a visiting lecturer to the Korean Knee Society Meeting in Seoul.

Dr. Chenger was honored with the Rose Scotter Bursary Award in Medicine by the University of Lethbridge, the Dr. Olav Rostrup Award, second place at the Alberta Orthopaedic Residents’ Research Day, and the AMTEC Award of Merit.

Dr. Chenger was the President and Chairman of the Canadian Orthopaedic Resident’s Association, served as a Guest Adjudicator with the Canadian Orthopaedic Residents’ Association, held several offices with the Colonel Belcher Hospital, was the Unit Manager for the Musculoskeletal Course at the University of Calgary, was a member of the Calgary Medical Society, was local chairman for the Orthopaedic Relocation Project with Vanderbilt Medical Center, and was a Howmedica Consultant. Currently, he is a consultant, lecturer, and moderator at numerous orthopaedic CME knee courses for Zimmer, is a DePuy Consultant and is a member of several Centennial Medical Center committees. Dr. Chenger designed and developed an FDA approved total hip replacement prosthesis. He also holds a U.S. patent for a containment shield for surgical instruments.

Dr. Chenger is a member of the Alberta Medical Association, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Physician and Surgeons of Alberta, the Canadian Medical Protective Association, the Canadian Medical Association, the Alberta Orthopaedic Association, the Calgary Medical Association, a Fellow of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Society, the Southern Orthopaedic Association, the Nashville Surgical Society, the Nashville Academy of Medicine, the American Association of Hip and Knee surgeons, and the American Medical Association.
