Editorial Text 1
Good fortune to visit Hong Kong City By Ed Collins Dine Out I'll admit right up front that I've never been a big fan of Chinese food. I'd rather dig into a big plate of veal parmesan and pasta any day. However, my wife Allison loves all kinds of Oriental cuisine, so you could have knocked her over with a feather when I told her that we were going to review Hong Kong City. We live in Taunton and the restaurant, which is downstairs from the Roseland Function Room (formerly known as the Roseland Ballroom) is three minutes down the road from our house. There was a good number of cars in the parking lot on a late Sunday afternoon, but the restaurant has a big dining room and we were quickly shown to a table. The upscale decor was dark, but subdued, with low-hanging lights and framed Chinese art on the walls. The tables, including some circular ones with lazy susans in the middle for easy food sharing among bigger parties, were spread out nicely, and we never felt infringed upon. It was easy to have a conversation and the background music was kept so low that I barely noticed it. Our waiter, Song, who also goes by the western name of Dave, greeted us and took our drink order ???? a diet Coke for me and a ginger ale for Allison ($1.95 each with free refills). My wife has been known to enjoy an occasional scorpion bowl, but decided to pass this time around. The large menu had all the classic favorites: chow mein or chop suey ($8.50), egg foo yong ($8.95), General Gau's Chicken ($10.95), pepper steak ($10.95) and a Pu Pu Platter appetizer ($17.95 for two). Chef's specialties include sesame beef ($13.95), mango shrimp ($13.95), crispy shrimp with walnuts ($13.95), sizzling filet mignon with black pepper ($17.95) and Peking duck ($19.95). There was also a huge selection of sushi and makimono (rolled sushi). Diners can order a la carte at the 20-seat sushi bar, and sushi platters, which range in price from $59.99 to $149.99, are also available. While sipping cups of complimentary hot tea brought to the table by one of the bus girls, we decided to start with an order of boneless spare ribs ($6.95) and a four-piece order of beef teriyaki ($6.95). The ribs had an addictively sweet sauce and the beef teriyaki was cooked nicely, with a marinade that was a nice complement to the meat that arrived on the traditional wooden skewer. For our entrees, we decided to share an order of sweet and sour chicken ($9.50), the house lo mein ($8.95) and a dish I had never heard of before, beef chow foon ($9.95). The batter-coated chicken was served with a sticky red sauce that was flavored with pieces of pineapple, onions, red and green peppers and maraschino cherries. The flavors blended together very smoothly and the dish was nice and light. The lo mein, which featured chicken, shrimp and pork, was served piping hot and was kept moist by a tasty brown sauce. My favorite dish was the chow foon, which proved to be a nice mix of flat, wide noodles, onions, bite-size pieces of beef and a smoky sauce that really got my attention. In a good, happy way. We had more than enough leftovers to take home, but I was in the mood for dessert and decided to try the Summer Berry Stacker ($5.95), a wonderful mix of cheesecake and white cake with strawberries and raspberries that was topped by a thin layer of white chocolate. My dessert, which I shared with Allison, really hit the spot and capped a great meal. All in all, I left Hong Kong City with a whole new appreciation for Chinese food. Everything we tried was nicely cooked and the flavors were light and tasty. Not counting tax and tip, our bill came to $52.15, which was very reasonable considering that we received enough food to easily feed four people. On our way out, it was interesting to discover that ballroom dancing is offered upstairs in the function hall on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. Doors open at noon and admission is $10 with complimentary coffee and cookies. Lessons are given from 12:30 to 1 and 2:15 to 2:45. I would eat Italian food three meals a day, seven days a week if I could, but it's nice to know there's a refreshing alternative right down the street that my wife and I can both enjoy. Allison was pleasantly surprised by my positive reaction to our dining experience. She's had to drag me kicking and screaming to Chinese restaurants in the past, but I'll be more than willing to visit Hong Kong City in the future. I might even suggest it on my own. The food, service and atmosphere were outstanding and I can't wait to try one of those scorpion bowls. Dine Out's reviewer visits restaurants unannounced and at his or her discretion.
