Editorial Text 1
Chatham Squire?s winter welcome By Laurie Higgins, Cape Cod Times February 08, 2008 The long, slow months of winter can be excruciating for restaurants, but many keep the seats filled by offering great specials to lure customers in the door. The Chatham Squire offers an incredible value with its ?Dinners Du Jour? served all evening on weeknights. There are three to four dinners to choose from, and all come with the choice of a cup of homemade soup or a small salad, and dessert, for $12.95. The dinners change daily, and the staff at the Squire updates the ?Dinner Delights? specials page every day as well, so customers can visit the restaurant?s Web site to see what?s cooking. On a recent Thursday, my husband and I visited the Squire and enjoyed three-course dinners including beverages for under $20. We both started with the salad, which was a very small plate of fresh field greens topped with sliced mushrooms. The blue cheese dressing tasted homemade and had an unexpected but tasty garlic flavor. It was not too filling, but a nice taste to start the meal. For dinner I ordered Swordfish N.O.L.A., which was a heavenly dish of creole-style gumbo. It came with four medallions of swordfish simmered in a spicy sauce with onions, red and green peppers and fresh okra that was perfectly cooked. Meaty chunks of Tasso ham added a yummy smoky spiciness that was sublime. The dish was topped with a generous sprinkling of fresh scallions that gave it extra bite and crunch, and was served with rice. My husband ordered the braised pork shank, osso bucco style. The two meaty shanks were fork-tender and cooked in a flavorful tomato and garlic sauce with tiny diced carrots. It was accompanied by basil mashed potatoes that were creamy, full of pungent fresh basil, and nicely garnished with a fried basil leaf and crispy square of thinly sliced fried pork. They were delicious. Because our dinners were so affordable, we were able to splurge on a glass of wine. The Squire has several wine specials for $5 a glass, so we each had a glass of Tyrrell?s Lost Block Shiraz, a plummy Australian wine that paired well with our dinners. Dessert was a small dish of warm Apple Brown Betty topped with a dollop of whipped cream. The apples were slightly crunchy and nicely set off with cinnamon, oatmeal and brown sugar. Still under budget, we even ordered a cup of coffee ($1.19) with our dessert. The salad and dessert portions were small, but we were both plenty full when we left, and we?d actually rather have a lot of different flavors than big portions of one thing, so it suited us just fine. It was really nice to have a leisurely meal that included so many courses - and best of all, the total for each meal was only $19.14. Not only was the bill sweet news, it was topped with Bogdon?s candy sticks for a finishing touch.
