He completed both a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Dr. Herbert joined the Vanderbilt teaching faculty upon completion of his fellowship and served as the Director of the Reproductive Endocrinology Division from 1989-90.
