Mission
Avila's path began in 1650 in LePuy, France. Guided by a belief in the dignity of every individual, the original six Sisters of Saint Joseph had the courage to respond to the needs of others around them. They nursed the sick and helped the homeless. With this commitment to one???s neighbors, the Sisters of Saint Joseph founded Avila in 1916 as the College of St. Teresa. When the college expanded to a larger campus in 1963, its name was changed to Avila to honor St. Teresa of Avila. In 2002, Avila College became Avila University, a name reflecting its growth and development as an institution of higher education. Avila University's commitment to excellence, to service of students and the community, to quality education of spirit, mind and body, and to the growth of the whole person is deeply rooted in its Catholic heritage and in the lives and beliefs of the founding Sisters. Today, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet sponsor Avila and serve as constant reminders of the University's mission. Avila???s 50-acre campus is located on the historical Santa Fe Trail in beautiful south Kansas City, Missouri. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, members of the Avila community not only enjoy the benefits of its suburban location, but also its easy access to Kansas City highlights. Known for its jazz district and world-famous barbecue, Kansas City is home to professional sports teams, premier shopping districts, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and the American Royal. The City of Fountains, as Kansas City is known, is a major Midwest travel destination. Avila's campus is made up of 11 buildings, including three residence halls, a multi-million dollar renovated field house, a sports complex, theatre, library, chapel, and classroom facilities. Recent building additions and renovations include a suite-style residence hall and expansion of the nursing laboratory facilities. Avila University provides an educational experience rooted in the Catholic tradition and in the spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, both of which emphasize collaboration, examination of social issues, responsiveness to the needs of others, and respect for the worth and dignity of each individual. An Avila education balances general knowledge with specialized skills, learning to think critically, and putting that thinking into practice. Avila students travel to Mexico to build houses for poor families, conduct health assessments for children in inner city schools, debut award-winning films, and create web pages for high profile clients like Rollingstone.com. Avila believes that real-world learning becomes real-life achievements. The faculty is committed to excellence in teaching. Research and publication are also valued especially when collaboration of students and faculty is involved. The Avila University faculty is dedicated to life-long learning, professional growth and excellence in the classroom. Avila University nurtures cultural diversity which honors and draws upon the talents of all its students, faculty, and staff. In the fall of 2009, thirty-five percent of new undergraduate students were members of minority groups, the highest of any school in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Students are involved in a variety of activities on campus, including 40 student organizations, honor societies and student government. Most majors offer a club or association that allow students to learn outside of the classroom setting, exchanging ideas and philosophies with peers, and providing a richer academic experience. Opportunities for leadership exist as early as freshman year. Nearly 85 percent of Avila's 13,000 alumni have chosen to stay and work in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area. Avila alumni are leaders in their fields and continue the Avila tradition of "serving the dear neighbor" by serving in the communities in which they live.
