Mission
John Carroll is a private, coeducational, Catholic and Jesuit university providing programs in the liberal arts, sciences and business at the undergraduate level and in selected areas at the master's level. As a Jesuit Catholic university, John Carroll inspires individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world. Academically, we stress that each individual is important and students must be given focused, caring, personal attention. Students are challenged to pursue wisdom, competence, psychological maturity, spiritual strength, ethical grounding and social and global awareness. The hallmark of this person-centered reality of Jesuit, liberal arts education is that it must always lead to action. Students are encouraged to use their knowledge and abilities in service to the world; to make a difference for others. The Boler School of Business consistently ranks in the top 10 business schools in the Midwest and is AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited -- a prestigious distinction that is only awarded to the top 10-12% of business schools nationally. In the 2009-2010 academic year, John Carroll has developed a number new academic programs including: Entrepreneurship, Leadership, East Asian Studies, Peace, Justice and Human Rights; all tied to the existing academic planning process. Outside of the classroom, over 2,000 members of the JCU community, including students, faculty, and staff, participated in over 30,000 hours of some form of community-based service on behalf of the University during the academic year. In February 2010, John Carroll was one of 23 Jesuit institutions nationally recognized for involvement in community service by The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. More than 150 students participated in immersion experiences traveling to Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Ecuador, Appalachia, Chicago, Biloxi, New Orleans, Louisville, and Cleveland. They have served meals, helped build homes and spent time with families discussing faith, values and mission. Fourteen immersion trips helped students learn about the challenges faced by people living in other parts of the country, the world, and in their own backyard. The Saint John's Bible -- the first handwritten and hand-illuminated Bible in 500 years -- debuted at John Carroll in April 2008 for permanent display in the Grasselli Library and Breen Learning Center. Our graduates are in demand with 99% of our graduates from 2009 employed full-time or in full-time graduate programs within nine months of graduation. Our distinguished faculty includes 212 full-time members; 94% hold doctoral degrees or the terminal degree in their field; 78% are tenured; 13% are on a tenure track; 11% are visiting professors; 9 are Fulbright Fellows; 190 have published books, articles or have received research grants in the past two years. Our student/teacher ratio is 15:1.
