Mission
Founded as the La Crosse Normal School in 1909 with a focus on physical education and teaching, UW-La Crosse has grown to serve approximately 10,000 students. One of the 13 four-year campuses in the prestigious University of Wisconsin System, UW-L offers 85 undergraduate degree programs in 30 disciplines and 21 graduate degree programs and emphases in eight areas. The university has three colleges: Business Administration, Science and Health, and Liberal Studies. In recent years, UW-L has positioned itself as one of the country???s best public universities. In 2010, USNews & World Report ranked UW-La Crosse No. 3 among public universities offering bachelor???s and master???s degrees in the Midwest, the highest ranking of any UW institution in its category. The university was No. 34 for out-of-state students among public colleges nationwide in the most recent report by Kiplinger???s financial magazine. A commitment to excellence weaves throughout campus. It is the common thread that connects students, faculty and staff. UW-L has become the prominent intellectual engine that educates a high quality workforce for the region, and beyond. Many of the university???s accredited degree programs have earned distinction for excellence. Microbiology and exercise and sport science are designated as UW System Centers of Excellence. The College of Business Administration holds national accreditation. The 128-acre campus offers Wisconsin???s only nationally-accredited degrees in recreation management and therapeutic recreation, the UW System's only nuclear medicine technology program, and the Midwest's only undergraduate archaeology major. UW-L added its first doctoral program, in physical therapy, in 2007. Through the La Crosse Medical Health Science Consortium, UW-L and its partners bring leading-edge health care to the 7 Rivers Region, along with a state-of-the-art health research and education facility. The university???s growing international efforts are gaining recognition: UW-L received the 2009 US Department of Commerce Export Award for its impressive international student recruiting and programs. Its outstanding athletics tradition continued in spring 2010 when the Eagles captured another women???s gymnastics crown. It was UW-L???s 25th national championship since 2001.
